Get Him Back

How can a train my labrador to come back to me whenever I call him no matter what?

My 3yr old lab runs away from me and only listens to me when he feels like it. He has run across the road many times now and it’s very dangerous. What can I do to get him to listen to me? When he runs off and I call him to come back to me it’s like he blocks me out completely and doesn’t listen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If he’s a typical lab he’ll sell his soul for a few biscuits, which makes training things like recall really easy.

Train him OFF the lead – Labs are smart enough to know the difference between coming back because you can reel them in on the end of a piece of rope or chain, and choosing to come back when they’re running free.

Fill your pockets with biscuits, kibble or his favourite treat, and take him out somewhere enclosed where he can’t get too far from you – eg. a park. Call him back every couple of minutes, and every time he comes back make him sit and make a big fuss of him (even if it took him 5minutes and repeated calling to get him there) so its a positive experience. The first 4 or 5 times, give him a treat. After that, only give him a treat sometimes – eg on the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th time.
(If you want to get technical, this is selective, varied interval reinforcement)

As he gets quicker at coming back, spread the treats out more and more. The key is to keep it unpredictable – if you give him a biscuit every single time, then the first time you don’t, he’ll think the game’s over and won’t bother coming back the next time you call. If he only gets a treat every now and then, and can’t predict when the next one is coming, he will live in hope and keep coming back just in case!

Make a game out of it, and do it for 15 minutes or so every day.

On a separate note, you MUST put your dog on the lead when you’re by a road – even the best behaved dog in the world might run out into traffic if he gets distracted or sees something interesting to run after…. its just not worth the risk.

In their first recorded collaboration as She & Him, Deschanel and Ward strike the same …

Fiona Apple, brooding, brainy belter and capital-A artist of near forbidding depth, begins her much gossiped-over third CD on a lark. The title track, one of two songs produced by Jon Brion before the label dispute that prompted hip-hop producer Mike Elizondo (50 Cent, Eminem) to step in, sounds like a Judy Garland number slathered with irony or something Rufus Wainwright might have had a hand in-…
